Sometime during the day, typically as your guests arrive you want to provide a gift package, or “tee prize”. This consists of some small gifts to thank your guests for taking time from their day to play in your event and support your cause. These gifts can be done in several ways, but it is important for you to consider who your guests are and how much you are asking them to pay to play in your event. As you have seen in examples earlier in this text, the larger the gifts and prizes, the more you can justify in charging someone to play.
- Tee Prize, these are give away when the golfers arrive, usually consisting of things that they can use during the day, a bag tag as identification, golf balls, sunscreen, a glove, golf tees. Visit our store, igolfevents.com, for great ideas and specials.
- Golf Store, companies like TaylorMade, Titleist, Callaway, and Nike can come in and set up at your golf course. You pre-determine a dollar amount each guest can spend on their products, and they get to pick what they want. This is always well received because they can pick they type of gift they want. Also, think about letting them spend more money than they are given. They use their own money for these additional dollars, and you can often split the profit with the golf course, one more fundraising idea!
At large events with big budgets, it is often fun to provide guests with prizes on each hole rather than as they arrive. This is really fun; each golfer cannot wait to get to the next hole to see what they get next. It is a little like Christmas!
Here are some easy ways for you to think through what you will need and to secure prizes.
- Put together a prize committee
- Make a list of all prizes for every contest
- Make a list of business that might donate
- Create a donation request letter, see ours at the end of this text
- Follow up on every letter sent out
- If you end up with extra prizes, save for next year
- Shop, you would be amazed at the value you can get for the money you spend, again the better the prizes, the happier the guests
Do not forget to plan for prizes for Auctions, live and silent, drawings, on course contests and others. Always ask the hosting facility if they will donate anything as well. Often they will donate a gift certificate for a foursome of golfers, or a lunch or dinner certificate. Remember that they want you back next time.
