Glossary of Terms
- 19th Hole – Bar
- 90 Degree rule – carts must follow cart paths and veer off only to reach the player’s ball
- Away Etiquette – ball farthest from the hole plays first
- Birdie – when a player completes a hole in one under par
- Bogey – when a play completes a hole in one over par
- Bunker – a deep sandtrap
- Drive – the shot off the tee
- Dogleg – a crooked or angled hole
- Eagle – when a player completes a hole in two under par
- Fairway – the mowed portion between tee and green
- Foursome – a group of four players, standard play in tournaments
- Green – finely mowed portion of the course where the hole lies
- Handicap – a rating system based on the payer’s average score
- Hazard – can be water or other obstacle
- Long Game – a person’s play from the tee to the green
- Mulligan – a do over
- Par – the number of strokes recommended to play a hole, holes are par 3’s, 4’s or 5’s
- Pin or Flag – the hole marker on the green
- Putt – shots taken on a green to get the ball in the hole
- Practice Range – area to warm up with woods and irons
- Putting Green – warm up area for putter
- Ranger/Marshall – person who controls pace of play
- Ready Golf – allows a player to hit when ready, regardless of who is furthest away from the hole
- Rough – unmaintained are off of the fairway
- Scratch – 0 handicap, shoots around par
- Short Game – the play around the green
- Shot – any stroke made during playing a hole
- Signature Hole – the hole on the course that the facility is most proud of
- Slope – rating system for course difficulty, higher the rating the more difficult
- Tee – starting point on each hole or device used to hold ball off of the ground
- Tee Time – the time you are to start play
